Howdy Home Distiller Community

Post by Rusty Shackleford »

Howdy members of the Home Distiller community. I've spent hours reading and rereading the great information on the parent site and dozens of posts from members and decided to take the leap and sign up! I get more and more excited to begin distilling with every bit of information I take in. I've been planning on distilling my own spirits for some time as a cost efficient and available means to procure a quality, homemade product. Though it was only recently I decided that the best means of getting in depth, case specific information was by joining the community and asking around.

I am fairly knowledgeable on the principles of fermentation and distillation, and even sensible enough to use a computer to some extent. What I lack is hands-on experience and trial-and-error accounts, which I hope to hear first hand. I think of myself as an active, avid outdoorsman and thinker, and would love to add 'home-distiller' to my repertoire. I have access to tools and equipment of all sorts, including practically an entire body shop. I can weld, solder, work wood and metal, and have friends/family that can do almost anything I cant.

My grandpa and his friends made wine for nearly their entire lives, and brought the tradition to the family when they immigrated here from Italy decades ago. Unfortunately, I never really got to know him as he passed some time ago. But I've located some of his equipment and many of his resources--reading the very books that taught him and many of his notes and learning a great deal from them. I have been researching wine making for years but only have had time to make small test batches and collect some knowledge on the way. I feel I am now ready to take up distilling, as it interests me a great deal more than wine making. I will post more in the appropriate sections on the equipment and resources that I have and my plans for my first still and possible some crude diagrams as I am a very visual learner. Its good to be a part of the community and I look forward to hearing back from as many of you as I can!
