Overheated stainless steel

I recently had a 10 gallon Firestone stainless steel milk can welded because it had a hole in the bottom. The result was an overheated mess, turning the area black. After running a water wash, the area seemed to have turned a rusty color and there was a brown residue in the boiler. Is it safe to say I need a new boiler?
