wash /how much
hey yall just was wondering how much suga wash yall make at a time ?I use one pack of turbo yeast & end up with about 5 gallons that takes most of the day to distill. How much wash do yall make at a time & how long does it take to distill it ?

50 liters at a time, 2 packs of turbo and 16 kg of sugar. I can run this amount and get an average of 85-88 % av in 6-7 hours. If I only use a small amount of reflux 4-5 hours and alcohol is maybe 70-75%. But with these sugar washes even stuff 88% needs a second distilling to clean it up. So lately my first runs I use very little reflux and run em through quickly, On the second distill I slow it down and use lotsa reflux.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

i beleive soWatershed wrote:5gals max - my pot still only takes a gallon at a time. Takes about 3h for the first run and 1h 45 for the second.
Fruit washed I rarely do more than a gallon - I can't drive so getting that much fruit in the first place isn't easy.
That's UK gallons, isn't the US gallon a totaly different volume?
my is a internal reflux still built from a 15 gallon SS beer keg , before i start to collect , i hold it just below the temp where it starts to flow , after one hour , i slow the water & the temp rises & we start distilling

Re: wash /how much
I do 40 gals, use 100 lbs. grain, 60 lbs. sugar the balance in water, no yeast added. Works off in 5-7 days. From the time the still is fired off, it takes one hour + or -five min. before it runs whiskey. Takes 2 1/2 to 3 hours to complete the run. I cut off at 80 proof and run singles down to about 45-50 proof for the next run.allen42 wrote:hey yall just was wondering how much suga wash yall make at a time ?I use one pack of turbo yeast & end up with about 5 gallons that takes most of the day to distill. The 40 gals. was how we done it back in the 1960's before Golden Pond died in 69. I wouldn't try that much now days, deputy sheriff lives half mile from me now and I don't think he drinks either!!!!!!!theholymackerel wrote:Howdy golden pond.
Doesn't it make ya nervous to talk about runnin' 40 gallon batches? Yer post there will set off "commercial moonshiner" bells in the mind of any government man that reads yer post.
I got another question for ya too. 100 pounds of grain gettin' a decent conversion will end up the equivalent of 70 pounds sugar, then the additional 60 pounds sugar in 40 gallons of wash gives a potential alcohol % of about 16 and a quarter %. If yer usin' wild airborne yeast yer only gonna be able to convert sugar to alcohol up to about 8-10%. Don't ya hate wastin' half the sugar ya use, and how do ya keep the sugar in solution from burnin' to the bottom of yer still?

I have got them to clear up fairly well, by racking them several times and then putting them somewhere where its cold, but it takes a long time. I just make sure I'm not putting excess sedement and dead yeast cells in the still and run it.allen42 wrote:for those that use a suga wash with turbo yeast, does the wash clear up for yall ? the last few batches i waited over a week & it was still cloudy ..

sounds kinda like you do as i have the last few times, just pull off the top making sure i dont get any solids ,,, i havent noticed any crud in the reflux when i washed up afterwards & the sprit is clear , so it must be ok
So Uncle Remus, do you think my time is about right for a 5 gallon of wash to distill out ,, takes me about 9 hours collecting at about 3 drips every 2 seconds?...

To be honest Allen the only distilling experience I have is with my still.
Which is a valved reflux. With this still and sugar wash of say 15% I get av around 88% refluxing at about 4:1, at this rate of reflux I am collecting 100ml in 4-5 minutes or collecting a liter in 40-50 minutes. 88% seems to come fairly quick and easy with this still, to get much over 90% it takes much longer. That is why I run it the first time around with only a small amount of reflux. The second time running it through 92-94% comes quick.
I'm not familiar with the design of your still (internal reflux), do you have waterlines passing through the column?
Mine has copper packing in the column and no waterlines pass through it, and a needle valve to dump the distillate back through the packing. I can recycle all the distillate or none or any amount in between. Sorry for rambling on here and not answering your question.

ramble on & I learn !! lol
the internal input & output lines pass through the column , they hook up to a water jacket on the condensor
after this tread got going I went back and looked at the valved reflux & FINALLY i understand how it works lol,,,, when i was building my internal still i couldnt figure the valved out in my mind so i went with the internal ,,, after i understand how it works, the Valved reflux seems like it would be alot eaiser to control
the internal reflux also has packing in the column
thanks
