I have been interested for some time in home distilling, and am now ready to take the plunge and build a reflux still "for research purposes"
My intention is to make a 2" dia based on the Stone column design (unless someone can recommend a better version).
I expect I will end up using a water heated for a boiler.
I have been following this forum for some time, and am sure I will benefit from all the accumulated wisdom it contains.
The project is a "no rush" effort, and I have a desire to do it right.
Thanks for the great forum

Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon) The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading
as for design, I would suggest a Bokabob as they are very easy to build and operate and can be used as a refracting still or detuned and used as a pot still if you are looking to make some whiskey.
The other option is the design that Rad has developed which was my second build and which I find a very good design, with a minimum of soldering necessary.
I will find the string here an post it for you to take a look at.
You can't really go wrong with a water heater for a boiler, that's what I use, check craigslist and kiiji for them, slightly used, but you need to gut them anyways.
As for the type of still, they all do work, it is more a how complicated do you want it to look.
The boka or VM is indeed a better choice. Can't comment on rad's in detail but I understand it is similar in operation to the boka. The VM is a more complicated design to build that probably has a nose ahead in performance, and the boka is easier to build.
