Hello from Southern Africa!

Post by Ethan »

Hi all!!! I must say some of the posts on here really crack me up! I have been stuck at my computer for a good four hours reading up on a whole host of topics, every now and then coming across some really funny comments. :ewink:

I am a hobby mixologist & and I have access to 96% potable ethanol produced from sugarcane (we have a lot of that here), but i do not have access to any type of still. I would like to experiment with the potable ethanol which when cut down with only filtered, underground (borehole) water has somewhat of a sweet flavour to it. 8)

I would love to create a rum out of it, perhaps even a whisky, brandy & tequila! My biggest problem though, is aging, I do not even know where to look for oak in this place, let alone a barrel! I mean, a question that perplexes me - with ALL the 25yr old whiskey being drunk in the world at this point in time, WHERE THE HELL DID IT ALL COME FROM?!?!? I am privy to the amount of 25yr olds bought in this little town & if that's the case here, i have no idea how the supply of 25yr olds is sustainable. Any ideas? I was once told that its only a percentage of the contents that would have to be aged (by law). :?:

I will thank you all in advance as well as for the wealth of knowledge i have gained in the last four hours just by reading all your comments! it has been an enlightening experience & i hope there will be a lot more banter of which i definitely want to be a part of!

Welcome Ethan.

The companys that have been producing those 25 year olds have likely been in business for a really long time.

Welcome aboard.

Anyone can build a still from readily available materials, it's not that hard trust me. Accesses to cheep neutral is a good thing, you can make a lot of sprites such as raki and gin. For whiskey making your going to need to start from scratch.

As for 25 year old whiskeys I have had some that I suspect where counterfeit. Honesty I would much rather drink a skillfully hand crafted 7 year old then a average 18- 25 year old commercial whiskey.
