The calculator is inaccurate unless it has been fixed. If you add 1 liter of water to 1 liter of 100% alcohol you will not have 50% alcohol nor will you have 2 liters of liquid.Bujapat wrote:I think it doesn't matter...
Generally, I put water onto alcohol; it's quite easier to get the proof I want.
I allways use the calculators found in the site... I've made a special page with Netscape Composer with all the site's calculators, so I can use them off line... in the kitchen or celder!

I have found that too, but i use the calculators as a rough guideline. Check it with the alco-meter and adjust if neccesary.knuklehead wrote:The calculator is inaccurate unless it has been fixed. Btw; i mixed a bottle of vodka so many times i know just how much to do in the bottle and fill up with water

Bujapat is this the one posted on yahoo distiller forum?
I downloaded it and fixed it up some. I combined some of the tables and added selectable input/output to allow for US measures or a combination of US/metric.
As far as the accuracy of the dilution formula, does anyone have a better formula or is the inaccuracy negligable or dependent on temperature or something that would make it difficult? I would think the inaccuracy of measurements might be such that the formula would be sufficient.

I also use calculator (found in the site homedistiller.org) as guideline.
In fact, if I want 40% proof, I calculate to get 42%. Then, when diluted and before adding any sugar (liquors), I measure with an alcohometer. I use 3 alcohometers with different accuracy : one goes from 0 to 100 % (I use it during distillation), another goes from 30 to 70 % (I use it for dilution) and the third one goes from 0 to 40% (I use it for tails, in fact rarely).
I never payed attention at the difference between the calculator's result and the effective proof measured with alcohometer... I'll do next time!

I just gone to the site about bourbon... I tried some calculations and compared with homedistiller's calculator. Both give exactly the same results!
