There is a local grocery that has an in store bakery. They get their prepared frostings and such in 4 liter plastic buckets. They are food grade plastic and their lids have a foam rubber seal that makes them airtight, but the real news is they give them away... free. They are absolutely great for (among other things) storing your washes. I just stripped 12 gal. of Gerber wash that I fermented last fall. I racked it out of my fermenter and stored it in a cool cellar and it was still good. I really thought that when I opened the buckets, I would find a moldy mess but it was OK. I am sure there are thousands of those buckets out there... oh, did I mention that you can drill a hole in the lid and install a bubble lock? I hope this helps somebody.

yeah, ibfestus, 4 liter - or about 1 gallon - food grade plastic pails with a nice lid is a useful find for lots of things. a yeast bomb comes to mind but if i had a few, i'm sure i could find other uses too.
in this hobby, you can never have too many plastic pails or fermenters. as my favorite fermenter has always been the 40 gallon or so Brute trash can with the loose lid and nice casters under it. even when full of wash it rolled around easy enough. a one gallon plastic pail would be nice to use as a dipper for that fermenter! see, told you i would find other uses... (but i would probably just be lazy ole me and pump it into the keg boiler like i always do).
OK, it WAS my favorite fermenter until i lucked upon a pair of 55 gallon food grade plastic barrels for $20 each with tight fitting lids. Then the Brute was demoted to corn storage.
I guess the point is big or small they are all handy to have.
does it have a bale or handle? i'm thinking it would make a nice sugar or corn scoop too.
also its a good size for the printed circuit boards that i sometimes etch with ferric chloride.
if i had a few more i could organize my bags of salt, baking soda, epsom salts, miracle grow, etc... Plus its about the largest container that will fit into my refrigerator or freezer.
the list just goes on and on. nice catch ibfestus. when i get back to the states, i'll place my order for a few dozen, OK? haha

Re: I found a bonanza...
Actually I had a brain fart... those buckets are 4 gallon, not 4 liters and yes they do have a bale and are air tight so critters can't get in. Sorry for the misinformation.
Re: I found a bonanza...
funny you should mention this I just got a call from my local bakery saying they've 4 buckets for me
(3 five gallons and one that is quite a bit bigger), but I talked to them over a month ago, apparently there is quite a waiting list where I live.

There's a game called drinking - it's a lot like solitaire

another good one which i use in the coffee shop i work i get all the 750 ml glass bottles with caps. they are forever just getting thrown out. labels come off with a soaking and scrape, then soak again and wipe and it all comes off really easy. i get about a case a week.
