Plastic tube

Post by dave »

The tubing used from condenser outlet to the collection bottle, does it matter what plastic tubing you use? Does it pick up a rubbery plastic taste on its way to the bottle if you use the same tubing as for the cooling water?

Yes it certainly does matter, dave. You really do need to visit the "Reading Lounge"
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading

Dont use plastic tubing for collection.

The plastic can break down in the presence of heated alcohol or alcohol at high concentraions, of which, yours will be both. Keep in mind, alcohol is a solvent.
The taste will leech into your shine and you will be basically drinking polymers. Either way, you dont want that.

Build a stand or a holder to keep your collection bottles under your outlet or extend the pipe, or run a small section of copper to your collection bottles.
Seriously. DONT use plastic with the high strength alcohol. Its a bad mixture.

Would using one of those silicone hoses be ok?

I read it can withstand boiling water temps.

alco, you 'can' use whatever you wish. You 'can' use lead solder if you wish. You 'can' jump off high buildings if you wish. You 'can' do whatever you wish, we live in a democracy.
However don't expect anyone in here to say that any of these practices won't hurt you, nor will we condone it. We are not police officers who will tell what you can or can't do. The final decision and consequences are up to you and your research.

Might I suggest that you explore the threads relating to safety and plastics, for YOUR safety as well as any OTHER poor fool stupid enough to drink your end product.

It isn't just about you, it's about others as well! Jesus H!!!

Copper, stainless, glass, some kinds of wood/bark, and flour paste. These are time-tested by human guineapigs and your hot concentrated alc must not come into contact with anything else. Even an internal combustion engine will have problems running on pure alc...gaskets and O-rings seem to dissolve causing all kinds of problems in the carby or injectors.

Human guineapigs acclaim that drinkin concentrated alc at room temperature will dissolve flesh and skin. If you are a guineapig then please forward any results/observations for the greater benefit of our species!

'Not-dead-yet' will be treated as 'wait-and-see'.
