Reflux Ratio

Post by doslaur »

I'm building a reflux column. I would like to know what is the best way to calibrate the column, and what kind of reflux ratio, should i be aiming for. I'm new to the reflux scenerio. Thanx, doslaur.

Calibration is done by finding out the total output of the still with the valve wide open and no reflux. Then decide on how much to draw off and how much to reflux. The final numbers depend on the efficiency of your column, power available to the boiler, ability of the condenser/s, type of wash, and what you like flavourwise. The reflux ratio varies from beginning to end, aparrently the VM will self-balance while the LM needs more human input. Don't forget the pot stillers who get excellent likker direct.

You can follow the numbers exactly in the recipe for brewing the wash. Build your still and learn how it runs. Keep notes because these will be your calibration.
