Kiwis: Where do you buy your stuff

Post by treka »

Hi All,

Been reading this forum and the parent site for a while and have found it really helpful. My question is really aimed at the fellow kiwis in the forum. Where do you buy your consumables for stilling? I'm talking about everything and anything here - yeast, sugar, molasses, toasted oak sticks etc, etc. So tell us what it is, where to get it and how much. I have found the odd thread talking about specific items and where to get them but nothing general covering the best places to find anything. I'm still very new to this (second wash is going now - birdwatchers) so any tips on wheres the best (or cheapest) place to get things would be helpful to me (and I'm sure others).

thanks

Welcome Treka, pop over to the welcome post for new members and introduce yourself.
The answer to your question applies world wide, sugar, the cheapest supermarket, yeast a supermarket for bakers yeast or a brewshop for others, oak, find a vinyard and buy a half barrel, or pay through the nose at a brewshop, grain, your nearest stockfeed supplier.

for me;
Yeast: brew shop, supermarket if I'm using bakers (rare, these days)
Sugar: supermarkets, look for specials, 1.50 per kilo is a good price nowadays :(
Grains: feed store. In the SI CRT was by far the cheapest for me. Up north RD1 seems good, but haven't shopped extensively up here yet.
Liquid Malt Extract: binn inn.
Molasses: feed store
Copper: scrappy and trademe
Oak: old wine barrels, can be found on trademe, toast / charr yourself.
Kegs: Trademe or the occasional cooperative liquor store
Fruits: try talking straight to orchards during harvest.
Fermenters: Old foodgrade barrels on trademe
Copper mesh: Amphora society
Knowledge: Here. Dundrhead and goose eye have it all, we just wait for them to dole it out :D

I get my oak from a cabinet maker friend of mine. It's untreated american oak and is pulled from the scrap bin. I'm sure if you asked around some local wood worker's they would be happy to help.
