What exactly is proof?

I know "proof" is some kind of measure of alcohol purity, but what exactly is it?

In the US system, proof is twice the alcohol percentage by volume.

In the UK system, proof is 1.75 times the alcohol percentage by volume.

Didn't know the UK and US were different. Bit like the two gallons. In an increasingly global environment it's about time our various measures were standardised. How about litres for volume? And if we just talked about %abv we remove another potential problem. Now, that's a start. There are a few more to go, though! Centigrade? Decimal linear measure? Mmmm.... I bet that's started a fight!!!

Bah to centigrade, the Kelvin scale is the way to go.

"In the US system, proof is twice the alcohol percentage by volume."

Thanks, I suspected that was the case. Screw that UK system, that's just rediculous. In fact they're both rediculous, %abv is the most easily understood system I think.

But the Kelvin scale would not be so good for general use because the numbers are pretty high so the point of reference is more distant and not so easy to get a feel for. Not that there's anything actually wrong with it.

But the world really should stick to one system of measurement, and it should be the metric system. Scientists use it because it rules. Everyone else who uses the archaic, redicoulously complicated empirical system should follow their example.

Ah... give me furlongs, fortnights, hands, stone, scruples, cubits, rods, chains, and sheds, give me pins, slugs and shoeirons.
You can keep your meters and liters and kilograms and megawatts, I'll take lumburgs and magnums and mignonettes.

Ok I've read through this post a couple of times and I still can't figure out what the hell you two are talking about. How did the conversation go from systems of measurement to some fat chick called Rosie?

Oh honey you can do it
Do it to me all night long
Only one that turns
Only one that turns me on
All through the night-time
All around the clock
Too much advising
Don'tcha never stop

Re: What exactly is proof? new [re: cartouche]

you'll never guess what i'm hearing right now:

"And I knew, there was no help, no help from you..."

"Thunderstruck" by AC/DC

My hope is that this is the last quotation of songtexts in this thread...

Re: What exactly is proof? new [re: ProfessorDuck]

AC/DC WHOLE LOTTA ROSIE lyrics
Wanna tell you a story
'Bout a woman I know
When it comes to lovin'
Oh she steals the show
She ain't exactly pretty
Ain't exactly small
Forty-two, thirty-nine, fifty-six
You could say she's got it all

Never had a woman
Never had a woman like you
Doing all the things
Doing all the things you do
Ain't no fairy story
Ain't no skin and bone
But you give it all you got
Weighing in at nineteen stone

CHORUS:
You're a whole lotta woman
A whole lotta woman
Whole lotta Rosie
And you're a whole lotta woman

Oh honey you can do it
Do it to me all night long
Only one to turn
Only one to turn me on
All through the night time
And right around the clock
To my surprise
Rosie never stops

CHORUS

Water, taken in moderation, cannot hurt anybody.
-Mark Twain

Hehe, OK... but I still don't get the relevance... I guess it's sort of like a flashmob... a sudden explosion of irrelevant weirdness. Except it's on a forum.

Re: What exactly is proof? new [re: ProfessorDuck]

Professor Duck,

In standard forum fashion through the machinations of Fourway and others, the discussion turned from something relevant (measuring proof) to something irrelevant (using archaic measuring units). Mind you that I was amused all along. Uncle Jesse posted lyrics to an AC/DC tune that uses the measuring unit the stone, and the rest as they say is history.
