Cleaning a keg after running a rum wash

Post by Austin Nichols »

As the topic suggests I'm about to run my first rum wash.

My concern is that I've read about these washes sticking to the boiler and I'm not sure how I would go about cleaning my nice new keg after the run.

My keg is unmolested in every way, she is a virgin with no holes except the one she was born with, and, I'm not sure about filling her with some dirty sticky substance that could tarnish her for the rest of her life

Should I just use a keg for rum wash's in a pot still only, or can it be easily cleaned to be used for use to produce vodka through a reflux as well.

Your advise will be much appreciated.

Cheers.

sugars make molasses "sticky" yeast eat the sugars so after finished it should not be sticky.
next do not try to heat up to fast that is where most burning come from.
you also can use a plate under your still if using gas.to help prevent hot spots.

Thankyou for that,

The wash is still a bit sticky so I'll just leave it a little longer, my hydrometer isnt useful with this wash as you know.

It does smell great and I'm looking forward to this.

She should clean right up with a good rinse out.

If you think you've left some sugar unfermented when you run,,,heat up real slow and leave yourself some headroom in your boiler.

Just give it a taste. When it's dry, it's ready.
