stainless steel still... sulfides?

Post by freezen2001 »

I have ordered a SS pot still from milehi and have read that you must have some copper somewhere along the vapor trail to remove sulfides from the alcohol. if i use a copper parrot will that do the trick or does it need to be in the vapor path? sorry if this has been covered, been doing tons of reading but not sure if it has to be in vapor form or liquid when it comes into contact with the copper.

in the liquid it works too, you can leave a piece of copper in your distillate after the run and see it turn dark.
But the hotter, the faster the reaction so it's better to have the copper in the vapor path

From what I have read it has to be clean copper (no patina) so I don't think copper just anywhere in the path works. Wine guys say you could drop a copper penny in wine and it doesn't have to be clean because the acids in the wine (wash in our case) cleans it and makes the copper available to react with the sulfites. If this is true I would say that some copper bits in the boiler would work better than patina covered colums and condensers.

I did a test about a month ago. Took equal amounts of wash and placed a 1 inch piece of 1.5 inch pipe and let it sit in the wash 24hours. It was on a string and I would give it a swirl whenever I though of it. After 24 hours in the wash it was sparkling. Ran both through my pot still with a about 12 inch copper riser and copper coil in a bucket. Now it was just a stripping run on each of the washes but I did notice a difference.
