fermenter attracting bugs

Post by bgrizzle »

Has anybody ever noticed that their fermentors attract insects? I have NEVER had an issue with bees, mosquitoes, etc. Since I started distilling about 3 weeks ago, I have bugs all over my garage. And I dont see any ants, so its not the sugar.

I am curious if its the CO2 that the fermenter is giving off is attracting these bugs. I know that mosquitoes are attracted to CO2. I think thats the principal behind the mosquito magnet thing...

I'm just curious if anybody else has ever noticed this, or if I'm losing my mind!

Many insects, especially fruit flies love to put their eggs in material in fermentation.

Fruit flies also like bourbon whiskey.

That’s why we like to cover the fermenter with cotton or a lid.

Many companies don’t do that but may have other ways to avoid an insect invasion like traps etc.

OK... so to prove I'm not crazy... Hummingbirds eat mosquitoes and fruit flies. I have never seen one in my yard before. So I just go outside to look in my garage... check it out!
