Distilled Beer and got oily stuff as result...

Post by Ratabilly »

So I had this leftover beer (4 liters) at the bottom of a carboy my siphon didn't reach (I got a new one) and decided to run it thru my still for the hell of it, experimenting and whatnot. The resulting booze had alot of oily substance which i suspect isn't fusel oils because i had them coming all the way through my run, which i stopped after i collected about 400ml.

Now i know this isn't a really big run or anything, but i'm just starting here and i'm experimenting as much as i can, and naturally discard all of the stuff i get. So this run gave me a bunch of oily stuff which i suspected to be no good right away and aborted the run.

What would cause that? The previous run i did i used wine and everything went well. Is it because of the beer?

I'm running a regular simple pot still with a coil in a bucket of water.

Im confused...

I know hops is oily. Maybe that is it? I stilled some beer a long time ago, before I knew better. Dont rememer the oily stuff. I did find out there was nothing i could do to make it taste good. also I do know when your starting, you will still a lot of things, to experiment. :D

That's it. I ran beer through a rig once, that will be the last time I do it.

Thanks to ya'll for the quick reply. I've heard before that hops did release some kind of oil but i never thought it was that bad!

I got oil and some weird floaties from running that beer.... I didnt dare take a taste :| And I guess beer will be a No-No from now on....

Should I do a cleaning run to get that oil out of my coil? Or will it just come out with the next foreshots?

A brewery in the US and getting good $$$, $30 a 750ml http://newhollandbrew.com/corp/spirit/hopquila" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow They might make a wash without hops and add them after it run twice. I tasted it, it's pretty good. But for $30 I'll buy some bourbon instead.

Haha you're probably right... Well i did swish a spoonful in my mouth after the foreshots and what not, it didn't taste so good IMHO...

Smell reminded me of hum, how would i put that, spruce wood or something? kinda like a Gin-y taste and smell... Weird since beer is made out of grain and such...

Anyway like I said i only collected bout 400ml including the foreshots, and by then, the alcohol level had considerably dropped. So i had about 400ml of low wines, and frankly since it was all weird looking and full of floaties and oil, I didn't bother doing a second run plus i didn't know how that oil would react in my coil, if it would just stick in there or whatnot.

I just siphoned some high ABV likker through the coil to make sure all of that oil was washed out of there.... Figure if there is any left it will come out with the next foreshots.
