substitutes for molasses

Sugar, and all about sugar washes. Where the primary ingredient is sugar, and other things are just used as nutrients.

Post by dye99 »

I havent been able to find molasses around here anywhere so I was wondering if brown sugar would be an ok substitute for it. Also could you share with me a recipe if anyone has one. I would greatly appriciate it...

Have you tried the local Co-Op, they normally stock it. As for brown sugar, if you used Dark Brown sugar it might be closer then using Light Brown. Just make sure it's cane sugar and not sugar made from beets, which I think most cheap refined(white) sugar is made from.

I use brown sugar for rum making - the extremely dark very moist stuff, it's basicaly unrefined cane sugar - no processing further than the first boil. It's no different from using the raw cane juice that many of the top end rum distilleries use. Just follow the recipe for a standard sugar wash and make your cuts to leave the flavour in.

Over here you'd find the stuff as Muscovado sugar, I've been told you can't get in the US - it's considered unfit for human consumption - can anyoen tell me if that's true?

If you're not wanting to make a flavoured spirit, stick to refined sugar - brown sugar is far more expensive.

I made rum the first time with brown demarrara sugar. It turned out great but was a very expensive wash bill. I now use feed molassis and white sugar. I pail of feed molassis is $11 and I get two 40-50 liters batches out of it.

Plain sugar washes need something more to keep yeast happy. A six ounce can of tomatoe paste per 5 gallons is one way of feeding them.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper
