Men's One a Day Vitamins for Yeast.

Post by SCMoonshiner »

How do you all feel about using the men's one a day tablets as the nutrients for yeast?

Feel pretty good about it,,,,,,,,,,,Must be the vitimins! :D

Just wash off any candy coating before you grind'em up. And IMO don't pitch your vites into anything over 120 degrees F (or so).

I thought the reasoning behind using women's multi-vitamins was that they contain more of a certain nutrient(B12, maybe?) than do men's.

Only going from memory, here, as I don't use vitamins, either internally or in my ferments ;)

I take vitamins, but do not use them as yeast nutrients. Why not go to a Wine Supple house or such and buy some yeast nutrients? This way you know what you are using, and that it will work.

The reason I do not go to a supply house is because the closest one to me is 80 miles away, otherwise I would do
go. I could easily buy some online, but I am trying to keep the cost down a little. The vitamins have all the nutrients required for the yeast to multiply, I think. Unless I overlooked something.

Not all of us have a supply house in our neighborhood, but I appreciate your sarcasm.

Ya'll don't know how to order things using the Internet? Don't give me that credit card crap. It is safer to use the credit card using the Internet than it is to give it to that person in the cafe or whatever that goes in the back someplace to use it to pay your bill.

So getting back to the posted topic.

Yes you can use them, I'm not sure I would use them for wine, beer, or mead but, for wine and beer you shouldn't need to. For the purposes of distilling they're just fine. If you want to order commercial yeast nutrients that will work just fine also.

Thanks for all the replies. I started a 5 gal sugar using these vitamins 7 days ago, and it seems to be
doing great. I will post the final outcome later.

Some people claim they use vitamins because they do not live near a supply house. To use vitamins as a yeast nutrient is ok, but that reasoning is not logical. I saw your reason for not ordering yeast nutrient so obviously my comment was not directed to you.

I suggested buying a nutrient because I saw you were new, and might not know they were available. Take the chip off your shoulder and stop being so defensive. I was just trying to be helpful. Use your vitamins. They work.

There is no need for you to make any more posts directed to me on this thread if you expect a reply.

I wasn't being defensive Bert. You took it the wrong way. I was merely asking what the relevance was about the credit card post. Maybe it's you with the chip on your shoulder :? . I have thanked everyone who has replied to this thread, and that includes you. Nuff said.

I started a 2nd generation UJSSM last night. I deliberately did not put any nutrients of any kind when I restarted the ferment. I simply dissolved 10lbs of sugar in 1 gallon hot backset. Cooled off the mix and added water. Dumped on the grain/yeast bed and within 15 minutes activity had started. It had slow normal activity as there were 3 or 4 bubbles at a time with a break in between. I waited until this eveing before I made an nutrient additions. I checked pH before adding anything and it was in the 2-3 range (dark orange). I crushed up a B-Complex tab and added 2 tablespoons of DAP and 2 tablespoons of Ca++ Carbonate to the fermentor. Within 10 minutes of addition the bubbler rate has at least doubled in activity. The pH is now in the 4-5 range.

I have found this "cocktail" to be very effective when doing an UJSSM series. I used this same mix on my last UJSSM experience and that one went through 8 generations. The only ingredient I varied during that run was the Ca++ Carbonate as sometimes I put 3 tablespoons depending how the pH responded to the additions.
