Running still inside?

Post by kenfyoozed »

Right now i am running my rig on propane, but want to make the switch to electric. I do all my running on propane outside. I hope with going electic I can move inside. What do others do? How safe? and what other considerations should I look into?

I've seen this come up a couple times now. Its a delimma. Saftey is number one on this site as it should be. But we also are forced to remain secrective about our hobby and sometimes at the expense of absolute safety. Ideally all propane burners should be run outside and I wish it could be so. But it ain't. I run my burners in side with adequate venilation because I have to. If I were to take my still outside today I'd be locked up tomorrow. And I consider gas heat superior for my purposes. For folks doing all grain its almost a nescessity. On some brewing forums you will get flamed relentlessly for burning propane indoors. But that hobby is legal. I also brew beer with gas indoors to avoid unwanted attention to all my activities. Ive been doing it for years and IMO it can be done safely if proper precautions are taken to isolate the burner from all flamables and like I said with adequate venilation. Others may disagree. Just my 2 cents. Obviously electric is safer for indoor use, but is not an option for everyone and still not perfectly safe. Stillin is a hazardous activity even under the best circumstances.
This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which God intended a more divine means of consumption...

like smokehouse said, gas should be out doors, but with proper ventilation it can be done.

why not just get an electric hot plate?

well the plan is to add an electric water heater element to my keg. And then run inside. Any problems to work out after the switch to electric?
