My special Mash of Doom

Post by Ye_Old_Shiner »

My Mash of Doom

- Potatoes
- Rye
- Corn
- Sugar
- Wheat
- Yeast
- Water

I boiled the potatoes, mixed in the corn, rye and wheat all together, and added quite a bit of yeast. Right now its fermenting in containers, stored in a warm dry (and secret) place (Its starting to have a distinct alcohol smell about it)

What are your opinions? Will it make great moonshine? Any advise?

I've researched alot me thinks (Well, you be the judge of that) but apart from that, I'm new to the fermenting process.

Yup, it prolly will make sum "shine" but jis whut hits a gonna taste like is still up fer grabs! My guess is that if you run this through a "pot" yer gonna get some conflicting flavors. Th corn 'n rye will prolly go together OK without offending each other and the wheat will be mild enough that ya might not even notice it. But th potatoes, hmmn!
I'd be interested in jis what it does finally taste like though. :)

I am currious as to how you got the starches to convert to sugar. Did you use some synthetic enzyme, or were any of the grains sprouted?

I think that you might get a yield consistant with a wash made only out of the sugar.

The flavors of the various components will suerly come through, but you may want to investigate the starch conversion process.

As spiritmaker noted, corn and rye work well together...a spicey note from the rye.

I have yet to try the potato route myself.

My opinion would be, your gonna get alcohol in your wash cuz you got sugar in there. Everything else you go there will only be nutrients for your yeast. You really ought to read about making mashes and starch conversion.

Thanks for the advice :D

I actually have 3 containers full of variations on wash. They are all VERY bubbley and smell very strong.

My quetion is, how long do you think I should leave these containers to ferment?

Thanks.

That sounds like my first try at making hootch about 20 years ago. It make likker, but it wasn't real tasty. no, actually, it WAS really tasty, just in a bad way...

I have found that this hobby works best when you follow some of the established recipes. Absolutely follow the procedures for mashing. Branch out with your own recipes when you get more experience. And read Read And READ some more.

Hmmm..

Theres kind of a potatoey goo at the bottom of the container, lol.

Next I'm gonna try and make a simple mash consisting of just Wheat, rye, yeast and sugar. Should be easier.

Arrg, I doubt :D

It doesn't actually smell that bad. Its just the potatoes that are off putting, giving the wash a yellowish milky colour...

Anyway, the yeast are still working, the horrible foam has dissapeard (Earth has been saved). Its just bubbling alot at the moment, and smells like strong wine.
