Free Old Books on Distilling:

Amazon.com has two very old books on brewing and distilling.

The first one is;

The Art of Making Whiskey So As to Obtain a Better, Purer, Cheaper and Greater Quantity of Spirit, From a Given Quantity of Grain

The second one is;

The Practical Distiller An Introduction To Making Whiskey, Gin, Brandy, Spirits, &c. &c. of Better Quality, and in Larger Quantities, than Produced by ... from the Produce of the United States

If you go to Amazon you can search for the book(s). They're free, and you can download them to read on your PC, or you can download them to read on a Kindle.

You can download the free application to read Kindle books on your PC.

These books were written by Samuel McHarry in the early 1800's. I haven't had time to read both of them, but there seems to be a ton of historical information for the home distiller.

Plus, I didn't see anywhere where he recommended Plastics!

Ive read that 1 by Samuel McHarry 1809 a while back.best I remember it was written in old English(used f for s when they were two ss in a word) once ya get use to that its not hard to follow.More of a how to /about running a pot still distillery of the time.Got recipes methods of cleaning barrels fixing washes/mashes and such.Also has a how to get/grow your own yeast .Ive also read the complete practical distiller by Henry Baird in 1875 It does same for his time and he used a continuous still .I think both are a good read .

Yes both are good reads. I have read some brewing books from that time period as well. Its interesting to read and put yourself in a period of empirical knowledge. Science was only just budding. Most of all the procedures were derived from trial and error then passed along. They knew the effects of their actions but not the cause.

The layout of the still house described as well as well as target yields from various grains were interesting.

Also the master distillers work day described was crazy 4:30 am to 9pm. Shit we have life easy now.

One book talks about the piss poor quality of booze coming into the states from over seas, but says the rocking of the boat on it's passage mellowed the booze. Wonder!?!?
Use of salt and ash/wood coals in the still???
Using bacon grease to coat the inside bottom of still to keep mash from burning.
Good read for something from the 1790's.
