I got the same message when I tried to upload an avator of my machine. Then I just got it off the website with URL again like on the last site and then it worked fine.

Mackrel, try using this option. It doesn't seem to have the problem with pixel size, file size, or other errors.

Link to off-site Avatar:
Enter the URL of the location containing the Avatar image you wish to link to.

Also, Uncle Jesse, is there any way to get the file size of the avatars bumped up to 10-20kb?

I agree with Yttrium, just upload it here and use the "link to off-site avatar" option. That's what I did.
