looking for a cheaper mix

Post by terryt »

hello everyone - I have just mixed up my first batch of water, sugar and yeast. The whole batch cost me about $20, with the yeast being about 1/2 of that. I used some kind of yeast with a picture of a rocket on the package. I don't know what its called, but it was about $10 plus tax. I was hoping to find something similar for less.I've read about others using mixes that consist of a whole pile of stuff, but I don't even know what these ingredients are. Anyway, would anyone here know of a good yet inexpensive/simple mix that I could use ?

The yeast you used is Liquor Quick Super Yeast. Super yeast or turbo yeast are expensive to buy, if you don't mind waiting you can do almost the same job with 10 or so grams of EC-1118 which you should be able to by for around a dollar (depending where you live) for a 5 gram sachet. I get mine for 59 cents Canadian. If you don't mind doing lower gravity washes you could also use plain bakers yeast.

I get 12% abv from bakers yeast in about two weeks. Add a cup of molasses or so for yeast nutrients. Or a can of tomato paste would work also.
