Distilling store bought cider

Or "hard" cider for our American friends.

I have tried two different brands so far, different price brackets and ABVs, and both turn out a distillate with a very sharp smell, like vinegar. At first I even suspected some vinegar left over after my cleaning run, but that was not it. Has anyone else had a similar experience?
