Age your own whiskey kit
I thought this was a pretty good idea. Don't know if the whiskey is any good.

Re: Age your own whiskey kit
wow. I bet that is going to be a hell of a seller actually. Gives the average folk a feeling like they are actually moonshining. I bet they sell the hell out of it.

I'll have to go and check this place out, it's about a two hour drive, just over the mountains. I'll wait till spring, the passes are getting slammed the past couple of weeks.

I agree MK -- not a whole lot of appeal on my end but there is a potential market out there -- for those that would like to but can't.

That's cool. I don't need it. But, I bet it will sell. Why don't I think of these simple things?

WOW!!!! Yet another gimmick to make money for retailers which will certainly attract some folk, but I can't see any genuine craft boy/girls using it.
Where will it end? Maybe tablet form?

I agree with 'someone' getting rich. Just think of the word 'turbo' and that is all that needs said.Mud Mechanik wrote:Someone gonna git rich off of this idea, I agree with Mr Spooky, useless to me but great idea.
Actually, for a micro-distillery, this would be a pretty good way to build a market for raw whiskey, and be able to actually sell it for a pretty hefty price. Make 50% on the barrel, and sell 'refill' kits of right off the still white whiskey, until the person uses up the barrel. I find this to be a very smart biz move, by some micro. The person on the receiving end, stays 100% legal (few of us get to make that claim). If the micro is half ass decent in production of their white, then the end consumer would get a drink, likely to be decent.
Most members of this board are not the 'intended' target audience of this sale. It is aimed at people wanting to show off some 'home made' quality whiskey, but who either do not want to become a moonshiner themselves, or are scared off from the distillation process.
I know there are a couple micro distillers on this forum. I bet a light bulb is going off in a few heads right now.

Copper Run Distillery in Branson, Mo does something similar. They call it The Barrel Club. Buy a barrel, buy a few bottles of "moonshine as they call it, age it and share the results. BTW if you ever make it to Branson, Copper Run is a must see. Owner and Master Distiller Jim Blansit is a helluva nice guy and very open to Home Distillers(i'm sure some of you know why). He's got a 160 Gal. all copper potstill made by the Colonel in a micro no bigger than my living room.
This is grain, which any fool can eat, but for which God intended a more divine means of consumption...

, , Remindes me of WKRP in Cincinati, the ad-man (Herb?) was pouring J&B into a Bushmills (?) bottle. When asked what he was doing, he said he was ageing the scotch.
Oh,look!! Its a hole in the space-time contuum!!
Re: Age your own whiskey kit
Wasmund's also has a kit like this on the market.

For someone who does make his own having something like this out on display may help create a cover story for people who don't know what you do.

Re: Age your own whiskey kit
got a question for you guys...
not much of a whiskey drinker but this product caught my eye. One of the write-ups I saw on the product says that the small batch would let the whiskey mature in as short as 6 months. Am I correct in assuming that the longer it aged the "better" it would be. Is there such a thing as aging too long?? Would the product or the barrel start giving me problems??
I ask because I am getting married in 2 months and was thinking this might be a nice gift to buy for me and my fiancee. Keep it somewhere on display and then on our 10th wedding anniversary hopefully have something real nice to celebrate with.
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated. thanks

I would think oakin your own for a long period of time would be safer than any companies chemicals personaly, I just think kits like this have to many hurry up and rush additives just imo

Re: Age your own whiskey kit
dt3 yes you can over oak it. It's is all about personal taste though. you might like a real oaky flavor. The big distilleries say using the larger barrels takes longer but does a better job. I would love to see a all hearts run put into a 55 gallon for 5+ years to see just how good it would be.
