tin coated boiler

Post by rickhann@fastmail.fm »

Hi, I am new to this board. I recently acquired a Barnstead Model 1011 laboratory water distillation unit. It has a tin lined boiler. Would this impart any undesirable tastes if it were to be used for alcohol distillation. Any advice or comments would be appreciated. Thanks. Rick

All coper cooking vessels are tinned on the inside exactly to prevent imparting undesirable tastes to your food. just try it yourself. Rub a finger over the metal surface and smell or taste it. Stainless steel, aluminium, tin, nothing. Rusted iron, copper, zinc, yuck.

You want some copper in your vapour path. Tin coated boiler is fine, provided there is no lead in it. Tin is actually about as inert as copper.

EDIT: I have just been told that tinned may mean galvanized to some people. My reply about genuinely tinned. The good rule of thumb is, would you eat from that?
