% Abv question

Post by Boda Getta »

The % Abv of a wash before stripping; what % purity does the % Abv number represent? Would a 10% Abv wash mean that the wash contained a theoretical 100% alcohol?

Thanks

A= alcohol,,,B= by,,,V= volume. so a wash/mash/drink whatever with 10%abv
contains 10 parts alcohol out of 100. or 1/10 of it is alcohol.

Thanks Dunderhead; I understand that but I'm wondering what purity is the 10% (1/10) alcohol. Is it 10% 97.5% alcohol or 10% 50% alcohol or ..... Theoretically, if you were able to distill 10 gals of 10% Abv wash and extract 100% of the alcohol would you end up with 1 gal of 97.5% alcohol and be able to cut it to 2.4 gals of 80 Proof. If I considered 80 Proof as "drinkable" alcohol then the 10 gals of 10% Abv wash would net 24% of drinkable alcohol.
Is that correct?

To clarify further...
If you have a 100L wash @ 10%abv, then you have 10L at 100% abv... Now that is pure...
Bear in mind that no hobby still will give you 100% alcohol, the closest you will get will be 96% abv from a VM...

Hope it helps man...

that is at 100% so if you distill all out of say 100 gal.of 10%wash you will have 10 gal. of 100% alcohol.but this is just theory as you cant distill that high of proof and you cant remove all
alcohol from a wash.at least not with any thing we have or is practicable.
but even so it is handy to know as it can give you a idea how much you can collect.
