Nutrients?

Post by drpetey »

Hi. I'm new to this. REALLY new, in the sense that I haven't actually started yet. But I have all the stuff and I'm about to try and make rum using a pot still. I have the Molasses etc and I was going to use my own yeast that I cultivated for my sourdough bread. I spoke to the bloke at the home brew shop and he said that would work just fine. Does anybody have any experience with using a wet yeast like that and if so, how much should I put in? Also, do I need to add nutrients and if I do, what should I use (that is: besides the packets at the shop. I heard I could use fruit peel but is that true?)
Thanks in advance

Hey Petey, here's a couple of threads on what you're planning to do. If this is your first kick at the can, I'd advise a simpler recipe from the Tried and True section. A sourdough dough starter includes a mix of wild yeast and a combination of bacteria, so it's a little tricky for a first attempt. That's just my opinion. Read through the threads and see what you think. You can also do a search for "sourdough" or "wild yeast" and see what else come up.

Re nutrients, it would depend on what you're making. A straight sugar wash would need some but pretty well anything with grain does not require nutrients. Some folks add them to rum, and some don't.
