colum packing?



i have read marbles can be used so i was wondering if stainless steel ball bearings could be used and if so would smaller ones work better? also in the chem lab they have shaved copper stands, kind of like that greenplastic grass for in easter baskets.

Howdy,
If there is a concern about the ball bearings, I think that it would be their heat characteristics. It will probably take a great time to get them up to proper temp, then if they get too hot it will take forever to get them cooled to the proper temp. That's just my 2cents I'm no metalurgist. I don't see a real difference in the copper shavings, as long as they are pure copper. I ran in to some "copper" scrubbers that could be picked up with a magnet. It turned out that they were copper coated scrubbers. Now when I go to Wal-mart I carry a magnet with me.

good warnings. a 2" 1m column of s/s bearings would weigh a lot too. forget them and the marbles, they make crap packing. the copper is best, should be pure if it is from a chem lab. it will strip out sulphides/smells too. i too got crap scrubbers, went black and disintegrated.

I have been using broken safety glass (untinted of coarse). Get a side window from an old car, give it a clean and smash in a box. Put in a bucket and soak with some sterilizer and pour into column. (need to put some mesh in base of column so glass doesn't fall out). When finished with still, pour out glass into bucket and wash ready for next batch. (easier than cleaning pot scrubbers and more sterile). Getting 92-95% with no problems at all. reflux is working great.
