Hey all! Been reading this board so much lately I figured I might as well join. If nothing else just to make the search function more usable. Anyway I put together an experimental still fairly recently, which I thought was my own design, but after some research it turns out it is just a simple pot still. 16qt stock pot, homemade lid and a 3/8" x 20' worm in a 5 gal bucket with chill water flowing through. I've run a couple of my own washes through it, and so far I really like what its doing. I look forward to gleaning as much as I can from the vast wealth of information and knowledge contained in this forum.
One thing... For the record, I did NOT become interested in distilling because of that discovery TV show. I dont even have a TV, and even if I did, I cant stand those bogus reality shows that seem to be so popular these days. The first thing anyone says when I mention distilling is "oh you must watch that moonshine show huh". I hate that...
I do have one general question. Do any of your sell your product to friends or family. I just ask because when I took a sample of my apple 'shine to work, several guys were already calling dibbs on buying bottles of my next batch. I initially hadnt planned on making anymore than just a couple bottles for my own enjoyment, but I guess I made the mistake of letting friends sample some and now they want their own bottles. Is there a general consensus about selling homemade product? I'm not looking to make money, just to cover expenses. Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome, socal.
As for selling, do not do it. It WILL bring trouble. We do have rules on the board which you should read, being new. You can find them here: http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5090 Rule #9 strictly is written to stop talk about selling or bartering booze. That type behavior DOES bring down the law on all of us. For the most part, as a group, we get left alone, as long as we are simply making if for ourselves.
I feel strongly enough about it, that I have it in my signature.

+1
One so called friends tells another who tells another. Next thing you know someone's knocking on your door. Either someone's that heard you was making and wanted to buy it. Or someone that acts like that but has a badge and is not looking for a drink for him. If you know what I mean.
Other then that. Welcome aboard. You have found the best place in the world to tell others what you do. Because we all distill water too. And make homemade beer and wine.
Good luck be safe take your time.

Yep, just making beer and wine.Prairiepiss wrote:And make homemade beer and wine.
I simply have a storage problem, so have to shrink my beer down to fit into available storage. That's my story, and I'm stickin to it.
