Camping and distilling.

Post by mtblackdog »

Any of you guys run your stills while camping? I do alot of camping in the summer for work and for play. And am thinking about dragging my pot still (graham) and wash along. On my big camper electricity is no problem to run my water pump. But I have little 12 foot 73 Bell tow behind that is run on gas only that we use to get way back in. So trying to figure out a way to run my pump. Guess I could use an inverter off a car battery. On a side note no worries from the "man" its pretty remote up here in big sky country.

A coil in a bucket requires no running water, pump, or electricity.

The Boat bilge is a great idea. And since Im a fishing guide, wallah! Why the hell didnt I think of that? I could go the worm route in a bucket and modify my Graham. Or just build another still, who has enough of those anyway?

campgrounds are where you go if you don't wanna camp...

I'm with THM. Traditional coil in a bucket please... I would hate to end up with a dead battery and get stuck...

Yeah thats a good point. And most of the time we are near cold creek or river water so keeping the bucket cool is no problem.

Dnderhead. Well hell if you ever been camping you would know that dragging just a little more crap is just part of the fun. And on another note Im usually in camper couple weeks at a time for work.

i aint been campen for about 10 yrs. but i gotta admit it would be fun to run a pot still. just keep it simple, run a nutreal and bring some juice of some kind along and whack and stack sum fish. a propane turkey fryer would be perfect for that, i get around 6-8 runs on a 20# tank.
today marks the dawn of a new error.

Come on your camping for crying out loud. You got go with a worm in a bucket. And wood fire that sucker. Get a nice campfire going and pull coals out of it to put under the still.

Oh I definitely see a new build coming along. Why not? Would be kinda fun to learn the old way. Ive done a ton of Dutch oven cooking, manipulating heat with coals and such. Im sure after a little trial and error I could figure out the campfire still. Im thinking pony keg and nice little pot still with a worm into a good and ugly orange Home Depot bucket oughtta do the trick.

For compact traveling stills (on the small side) a gravity fed graham condenser works well. Make it just a bit smaller than your pot boiler for ease of storage. No pumps required. A short fat graham is just a variation on a worm that has a slow coolant flow.

Sounds fun, I used to plant trees for a living and camped out for months it becomes a way of life after a while and you don't feel right indoors. Sitting round a campfire picken guitar , meat on a spit, the dutch oven going and a still running. I think I would be in heaven. life is good

I know this big spring up on the Colorado river. I camp there often. I've often entertained the idea of bringing some gear up there and doing a batch with that good spring water.

Camping and stilling sounds like big fun to me!
