Calling all East Coast Members
Yesterday I flew into Washington National Airport and drove down to Williamsburg Virgina. I will probably do the tradtional Jamestown, Yorktown, and Colonial Williamsburg tourist things but was wondering if there is anything that are must see's in the area? I am also very interested in anything nautical. From here I will be spending 3 weeks working my way up the coast. DC is pretty well covered. I will also be doing the amish trip to Landcaster Penn. and taking in a nascar race in Deleware. From here I will be heading up to New York and probably out to the Cape. I am wondering if there are any good absinthe bars in New York and if there are any good brands I should try to buy while back here?
Thanks in advance for your help
Bushman
PS: I have limited access to internet as I have to come to the lobby of the resort which is a ways from our condo so will be checking online probably once a day or every other day.

Going from Washington if you want to avoid Baltimore than Gettysburg is almost on your way to Lancaster.
There are some distilleries in NYC.
Breuckelen Distilling
We offer tours and tastings on Saturdays between 12-6pm.
Unfortunately Kings County Distillery tours are closed until June.
Not sure of your route since Delaware is the first weekend in June and your in Washington now...Great Circle Route I guess![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)

Well, if you're REALLY up for it, I live on an island off of the coast of Massachusetts, if you feel like dropping by....

Thanks for the offers, my wife has relatives in Martha's Vineyard. In a week we pick up her cousins from Norway and they want to do New York! I would love to do some east coast fishing but doesn't appear to be on the docket for this trip! My wifes cousins wife has a blackbelt in shopping and loves designer clothes $$$$$, I would rather spend the money on some tackle for the boat.
We have done Gettysburg and even one of the people that died at Gettysburg used to live in my hometown. His charge while living in Washington was to try and start the pig war out in the San Juan Islands to divert the attention of the civil war. His name was Pickett!

Now I just might be able to fit this one in! I will google the location and see if it works on my way north! With a name like that it's got to have some potential.NcHooch wrote:it's a shame you're not headin south bushman.

If you have not been there you have to see Time Square. Go see a play, enjoy the food and watch the street artists. Ride the subway and see Grand Central Station. The energy there will keep you going for days.
One of my all time favorites there is Bev’s B-Liner Dinner. A 50’s style burger joint with teal booths and great shakes. All of the waiters and waitresses are Broadway want to be singers and grab a microphone every ten minutes, jump on top of a booth and belt out a great song. It’s the best free show in town.
Its about two blocks from the square.

Ruby Rosa, in NOLITA, makes great Italian food including pizza and all in a very downtown setting. We loved it more than Eataly. Rappini with sausage was awesome. Really.

Bushman;
Seems like a shame to have your boat sitting, just growing barnacles. I used to have a 100 ton Master License when I lived on the wet side of Washington. I'd be happy to take your boat out and run some of that nasty diesel/gasoline out before it corrodes the fuel tanks.
Let's see, "green right returning" errrrrrrr, "red, right, leaving".... guess I'm a little rusty.
Bull.

Green on Right Returning. LOL your killing me Bull. Most dont have a clue on mariner speak. I am sure you would be right at home on any boat. It kills me when someone wants to help that has been on my boat ten times and I say okay "get the stern line ready" or "rig for a starboard tie" and I get the deer in the head lights look.
Scary is when out on the water you see guys cutting inside markers. They are there for a reason.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and laughs!
NcHooch, if it looks like I will get to Dogfishhead brewery I will PM you and maybe I can buy you a drink if it works out.
Today was spent at Colonial Williamsburg and I will tell you where my mind was 1/2 the time.
Every home in the area, the kitchens had all sorts of copper pots
Watched a man making wooden wheels out of white oak the traditional way with a planer and hand tools, over on the side was a big bin with white oak shavings from his work. I asked what he did with them and he said they had no use so they burned them.
When I said I would be willing to pay to have them shipped to my house you wouldn't believe the look I got.
MR, I thought of you when I went to the gunsmith. They had a handmade machine for boring out the barrels of the rifles that reminded me of your jig for twisting copper pipe for your shotgun condensers. It was really cool as it forced the turning action just by pulling it out and pushing it back in. Hard to explain!
Every time my eyes lit up my wife knew exactly where my mind was heading.

Yes sir, or ya get the fellas that punch in the dock on gps, then in the dark follow the DIRECT path back to the dock, and forget about the break wall they went around before got out of the harbor! Seen it happen many times. MR is it RRR?

Re: Calling all East Coast Members
BENSTICK, that reminds me of a time with my old boat I was out in the islands crabbing and the fog came in. My old gps did not have a map just a handheld one that I could plug in routes. I had several routes put in but they were mainly to give me a bearing of where I was not to navigate (and I knew it). When the fog hit I could hardly see the bow of my 21' boat. I had to get out my charts and locate and make new waypoints to navigate. I went through Pevine Pass very narrow area without seeing either side. I also had to honk every several minutes as with a small boat you may not be seen on someone elses radar (I didn't have it at the time). After that experience I bought a larger boat with all the required electronics to properly navigate!bentstick wrote:mash rookie wrote:Green on Right Returning. LOL your killing me Bull. Re: Calling all East Coast Members
Yes, It is Red on Right Returning. All the new electronics are great but boaters should learn how to read a chart and practice dead reckoning using just their compass and watch. How the hell are they going to get home when their GPS goes down?
In my twenties I would ocean fish at Westport WA. I only had a compass and charts. Big water and rough bar but not much to run in to. I remember when I was able to buy my first Loran C. It did not even convert to Lat Lon. It sure made it easier to verify where I was on the chart.
I will fess up. I have goodies. I have a GPS navigation program on my laptop that displays a chart showing where I am at all times, my heading, speed and track. I have a small back up GPS and charts on board. I have radar but only use it in fog. I know pros that just drive with their radar. That is another skill set.
How many boaters do we have on board here? (lets highjack BMs thread)
edit to add; Anybody know the definitions of flotsome and jetsome?

Yes I read your post and got the connection. Shh.. we are keeping secrets.
You are the first to note the no "E" but no one has yet offered a definition. Don’t do it! There has to be someone that knows. Lets wait.
I knew you would not mind if I hijacked your thread. Hope you are having fun amigo. Give your girl a hug for me.

Floatsom, stuff from a wreck!
Jetsom, stuff thrown over board!
May not fish the saltwater but have a good share on the Great Lakes.
Fished off Cabo san lucas about 4 years in a row, and I sure as hell will take those seas over a bad east wind on lake Huron any day!

Re: Calling all East Coast Members
I have to admit MR that I would not have known the answer but saw it written here on the east coast while studying some of the history.
Years ago as one of the chaparone's while taking a group of students on a trip through the San Juan Islands on the Zodiac a large sailing ship as an advisor each high school student had to do a history report. The student I worked with was very good in math so she covered navigation. With my technology background we made a cross staff for calculating the latitude. Yesterday I saw a beautiful reproduction of the Davis Quadraunt probably better known as the Back staff. It was amazing and again I sat there probably for a 1/2 hour trying to figure out the math behind the curves and angles. Don't understand it completely but it looked like the smaller arc and the larger arc had the same orgin and the smaller arc was about a 1/3rd of the radii as the larger. I know how to use the Davis Quadraunt but know I have to figure out why it works!

Re: Calling all East Coast Members
Back to the thread, yeasterday I visited Jamestown and Yorktown where it all began and where the revolutionary war ended. Afterwards we went on a tour of Williamsburg winery. I have to admit we have some great wineries in the State of Washington and are second to California in the US for wineries. Williamsburg had some exellent wines and their winemaker was very creative to get different blends and flavors from the wine. One was aged in just stainless steel another partly aged in french oak barrels and part stainless steel while others were aged in American oak and some just French oak. It was amazing what a difference in flavor this made.
I bought 1/2 a case of their wine mostly red but they had a white Chardonnay called Governors Choice that won a national award that was very good and only $8.00 a bottle.

Yesterday I toured the Mariner Museum in Newport News, VA. to see the iron ships from the civil war. Today we check out of our condo and visit friends in the northern part of Virginia near DC. and in 5 days we head north to NJ to pick up our cousins that are flying in from Norway.
Re: Calling all East Coast Members
I was in the Navy 6 years and had learned those to generally mean (respectively) junk in the water that wasn't yours and jetsom being the opposite or what you caused. The terms even applied to submarines...my mode back then.
Reminds me of a Sea Tale. We were once plying the Sea of Okhotsk doing hydrographical research
. Our new Ensign had the Con and was navigating by periscope calling out course changes one after another. The Skipper came into control and watched a minute then said "John WTF are you doing! We're going to get detected"! "Sir! when we blew the GDU ( a mini-torpedo tube for ejecting weighted trash bags) a capped Tang bottle escaped...I'm trying to break the jar with the scope".
The Skipper said "let it go John!" turned around and left the Con shaking his head. (FYI If the boat is moving the scope always bulges the water in front of it. Guess the academy didn't teach that)

Simple definition.
Jetsom is something you loose or throw over board.
Flotsom is something you find that is worth recovering.
BM there is your treasure reference. How is the weather BM. Are the cherry blossoms still out in DC?
