Went back over Flute talk, Tried to HD Google search for olddog's sight glass tutorial mentioned around here several times. So, will these work for sight glasses????

Or, would I be better off with these....

yes. Infact i have saved that same link that i pulled off of another thread. You have to pickle them to remove left over lead though....
2nd question, depends on the diameter of your column and how easly you want to watch it work.
GM
(edit: upon closer inspection they are copper. You should be fine, they look like brass fittings in the images...)

Well, I'm still undecided on 4" or 3".... Those 2 inchers would look bitchin on a 3" column. I think

I do believe I remember seeing something of grainger on your build. I hope you don't mind that I will be closely replicating your toot flute, decided against bugle. Great news is, got the keg and there is a Grainger not far from here

Nimrod,
I included the bill of materials in the thread for a reason ... replicate away man.
Id recommend you use 80-90 of the .062 holes in the plates.

1-1/2” is plenty big enough to see into any size column. I have used Grainger trap adapters and love the brass nut look. The Pex supply one appears to be the same. Copper slip with brass nut. If it is copper, that is half price of Grainger. They seem to have really good prices. I have been to their web site several times but I have not ordered from them yet.

How did this work for sightglasses? Do you have an update to report?

I've seen a few with 3" glasses on 4" columns.
It looks like they are the gooly eyed kid with glasses on in 5th grade
Maybe thier owners need glasses to see without squinting.
1.5" to 2" wil give you all the info you need.

Just a note on those 2" slip joints (on my list also)...
i actually called Cello and asked them about the item, and they confirmed it is Wrot copper, no lead, not brass.
I was quite concerned as the picture looks like brass to me.
quick edit to add: does anyone know what size the glass would need to be to fit the 2" slip joint?
I saw someone used them in a build but cannot remember who and which build it was
have a great day!

Yep, they are copper and though not on a flute I used one on my LM rig to be able to see the reflux return. Worked perfectly for the last 6 month's or so. Actually McMaster & Carr sells borosilicate glass lens that fit perfectly. I used ptfe tape to wrap mine and it sealed perfectly, but it would be very easy to cut a gasket to fit out of ptfe sheet or cork sheet also available at McMaster & Carr.
edit: oops didn't see your question Rastus. The the hole in the nut is the advertised size. It would either be 2 1/4 I think. I think pex advertises the size on there site, but a call to them can answer your question. Mine was a 1 1/2" one and the glass is 1 3/4".

thanks for the info WV

WV,
do you recall what thickness you got on that glass?
I was thinking 3/16" might be solid enough to ensure a good seal without breaking them i am ordering a few extra just in case i need a few in the future.
thanks for any help you can share

Lol, this was one of my duh moments when I ordered my first glass. I first ordered a 1 1/2" x 1/8" when it arrived it slid right down the center of the bore without issue. While looking at the thickness I decided to go a little thicker and I did use the 3/16" thick one. So far 6 month's without an issue.

as a follow up i did order the 2" trap adapter and then also ordered the Heat-Resistant Borosilicate Glass located here:
http://www.mcmaster.com/#glass-stock/=o6diyu" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
i got 2 1/4" dia. and 3/16" thick... perfect fit!
although the 2" trap adapter slooks like brass on the website, the body part is copper, and the nut part is brass.
it looks exactly like the 1 1/2" adapter only it is 2". i cut some nipples @ 1 1/4" long that i can clamp into a jig and cut with a hole saw for the radius of the 4" pipe, thus, make any mistakes on 2" copper pipe, not the expensive fitting. when i get them right , i can solder them into the adapter.

i realized i would need to start taking pictures sooner or later... thanks for giving me a reason... i will try and get some done this weekend...
i have to finalize the length of my main column and make the cut. that 4" L wont fit my pipe cutter
and i dont have a chop saw , but i realized if i am careful the table saw with a thin kerf carbide does good, although have to make multi pass it made damned clean work of my 2 & 3" copper last night as i was preparing the various components... once i get these ready. i will get them to posing for a build portrait.
