where to buy oak aus

Post by Drewdk »

Hey guys does anyone know where to buy white oak in aus particulary in south aus. I have used french oak and other store bought chips and the are nice but having read a few posts here white oak sounds like a nicer finish and not to mention cheaper. Thanks in advance.

any local cooperage should be able to help you out

must be some there in SA with all that wine in the hills :)

a local one here in Brisbane sells offcuts from there barrel making for $20 a 5Kg box.

some have suggested that American oak is now a popular flooring timber here in OZ
maybe talk to a few timber suppliers

Also i have sent you a PM about a supplier

Interesting news I live not to far from Ballarat
@ Drewdk +1 on the flooring otherwise you can get cheap used barrels on ebay from time to time that could be knocked apart for the oak EDIT I should add that there are at least 4 larger cooperages int he Barossa Valley Heinrich's is the name of one , I think one is called SA cooperage, at least 2 more are on the tip of my tongue, not to mention the fact that most of the larger SA wineries do/use to have a cooper permanently employed so I would think you could get off cuts from any of these sources

Thanks Jean
