bad mash

Post by LONEEAGLE155 »

I cooked off a batch of mash following UJ recipe and everything went fine so I did the backset deal to start the sour mashing after a week the bubbleing has stopped but unlike the orginal batch there is no spent corn on top even though I added fresh corn and I have a scum on top of the wash it looks like a fine dust covering the surface of the wash is this normal?

What does your hydrometer say? If the bubbling stopped, you've either got a ferment that's done or close to it, OR a stuck ferment. However, to know that you need to measure your SG before and after.

What does the wash taste like? Sweet, dry?

People have complained about this same type of infection before.....It has happened to me before, too.

If you run it, I bet you will have a WHOLE run that is tainted with a nasty nail-polish-remover smell to it.

did you use any yeast? and how much?

I decided to ALWAYS use a heavy enough dose of yeast to fight off and kill most of any bacterias that might form.
