Doing a feints run

Post by Shiner »

When starting out here I read about saving feints for a feints run, which included heads. I later read that heads shouldn't be included. Well, to late for me, as I've already mixed them together over time. I'm wanting to do a run with it now and was wanting to hear what you all think about this. We've got a little better than 5 gallons that reads around 80 proof. I believe I read somewhere it should be cut to at least 40 before running. Am I on the right track?

You can definitely keep heads for feints run. Only foreshots must be thrown out. And yes , delute yor feints to 30-40 proof before run.

Some say keep heads only. Some say work them all. And some say keep tails only. But some of them say these things because they add what they don't save to the next run. But as you can see there are many ways to skin this cat. You just got to figure out what works for you.

You want to dilution to under 40% at least. Diluting to 30% mite help clean it up even better.

How will you be running it? What kind of still?

If your using a pot still. You mite check this thread out. I think this is a good way of doing it. I do a version of this. The last run being a reflux run.

Shiner, Like Mr. Piss said 40% is what you need to dilute down to, but not 40 proof there is a big difference. The goal is to get your still charge nonflammable so you will not be heating up a bomb! You do not need to go down to 40 proof which is only 20%.

At 20 % it's simpler to make good cuts.

Keep in mind that although you have already discarded fores, with a lot of heads in your feints your going to have fores when you run the feints. With a pot still you never get complete separation so your heads still have some fores in them. Also you will have to make a larger heads cut than you might normally make.

Thanks! I appreciate the heads up. What should I be using to delute it with, the same water I made it with, distilled water.....????? I'm running a potstill.

Thanks for the link Prairiepiss. A great read. I've done may searches for feints run, but never found that one.

Just clean water. You really shouldn't have a need to use distilled water for anything but diluting your final product for drinking. Making a wash can benefit from the minerals found in undistilled water. Chlorine is the biggest concern for a ferment. And it can easily be removed.

But tap water if its drinkable can be used to dilute for a second run in the still.

Thanks. I'm fortunate that I do have some great water that comes from a stream out of the wilderness that crosses my property. The same water the local moonshiners used here in the late 1800's and up through prohabtion. I'm very fortunate.

What would you say that the volume of good cuts are from a feints run compared to a regular run? Would the cuts look similar as shown in 'A Novice Guide for Cuts' ?
