Interesting thought

Post by Hawk_ »

Ok. After doing say 3 different generational stripping runs you proceed with a spirit run. Assuming that cuts where made for heads and tails could you do the spirit run with the last set of backset for the dilution fluid? This way you wouldn't loose flavor from the run I'm thinking. Thoughts?

That's exactly what I'm doing with my rum.

Yup...just what I did yesterday...used my last generation of UJSSM wash and added my low wines to it....ran it real slow, like double the time I take to Dow stripping run, and got some lovely flavourful hearts out of that run...airing out right now.

Will use it to make some Christmas Aquavit...using Martha Stewart's recipe...caraway, fennel, star anise, dill...stay tuned.

I think what he is asking is: When making a spirit run with several runs of low wine, the effect of diluting the low wine with the back-set (not fresh wash) from the last stripping run. Would it add more favor, as opposed to diluting with water.
Good question; I'm also looking forward to feed back from folks who have done this with UJSSM or SF.

I personaly think this is a viable option. But I have also debated it with others who seem to think its a waste of time. I have to figure out WTF they were talking about. But hey everyone has an opinion.

It could only add flavor. How much? But it has to be more then water. And if your after flavor I don't know why you wouldn't try it.

Diluting with fresh wash would be another option.

U can dilute with backset or wash to impart more flavour. Water will thin it out so if it's flavour your after then do it :)

+1 I have been doing this for some time not with backset but with left over wash to top up boiler i think it is the only way to go
there has to be flavour flowing over to the final spirit run.

I could def. see how this would work, and it seems that its somthing that has been being done quite alot. I know with UJSSM its done but thats mainly for the sour, same as for Rum. It gives more of a body flavor to it, it kinda makes me wonder what the large distillerys do to give theirs the full body flavor. -Wondersss-
