Pre-seasoning/flavoring an oak barrel?

With so many people producing small oak barrels on various auction/classified ad sites, I got to thinking.

Has anyone taken a new barrel and placed something other than your homemade liquor to season it? Say age some store bought sherry for a few months and then put your homemade liquor in? Rum and then liquor? etc.

Seems like it should work on a smaller scale just like the big boys. Maybe not as well, but work nonetheless.

Looks like 1L barrels run about $25 new. Not a bad price to tinker with some ideas.
