Site suggestion

Post by bellybuster »

Hi all, just like others I have immersed myself in the pages and pages of reading here, thanks for it all.
However...... There are some huge threads regarding some simple things that all should know or be able to search for. It would be a great thing for the site to have some of these threads condensed and locked into actual tutorials. I know allot of them already are in the new distillers lounge but there are a multitude of massive threads that really could be condensed to give the newcomer an easier go of navigating. This would reduce the number of "do your research" threads that give this site a bit of a high and mighty flavour that turns some folks off.
I'm sure there are many knowledgable folks out there that would be willing to take on single threads and make sense of them and scale them down to the point. A single example would be the heating controller. It has many examples in it of schematics that are not correct. Single threads regarding each different method would be a huge help in determining what is right for you.
I guess for the most part I'm talking about the new dist lounge, scale them down to relevant info and lock them.
I only would like to see this great site get better, it really is overwhelming to a newbie to come here and start reading only to find the pages and pages of a thread are mostly gobbledygook. I'm only talking about threads that have huge visit numbers.
Thanks for listening, if you think I'm full of it please feel free to inform me, I have shoulders like a trout.

If there are people who are WILLING to do this, and have the time, and enough knowledge to do it, or enough research skill to do it even if they have not done what is in the thread themselves, then PLEASE send a message to the global moderators (or to simply the moderators you choose to pm with).

We can setup specialized hidden forum(s), and give you forum mod rights in those forums. Then we can put a copy of the original into that forum, and it can be worked on.

The mod's, and mentors HAVE talked about this (quite a lot), behind the scenes. However, it takes a commitment of time, to actual go from talking about it, to someone actually doing it.

I would really like to have 50-100 'very important' threads, which we have chopped down, into the real meat. Then provide a 2nd post, that is the 'discussion' to that original post. So the original post stays 'clean', and the discussion post can have the volatile discussions happen in the sister thread.

So, you can see the need. Do you (or others) have the time and desire?

I fully understand the time aspect, I am a mod for a diffrent site and have spent many hours turning long threads into locked tutorials. It does take allot of time.
Thanks much for the reply. I would be more than happy to take on a thread once I get my knowledge level up there, should be another 10 or 12 years from now.

Great suggestion but as it has been pointed out - it would require a good deal of time. I have days in the office that I spend 2-3 hours on this site reading while on conference calls or netmeetings - it passes the time - I am still working - and I am learning :) but then I dont know that everyone has that kind of time. Something to think about for sure.
