Concentrating heads and tails

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Concentrating heads and tails

Post by Kelbor »

Hi there, I have had this question in my mind for a bit and have not been able to answer it in all the reading and perusing of the internet I have done. For some background, I built a pot still but only have about ten runs under my belt.

I am wondering about saving heads and tails for re-use. I know you can save them from several runs and then build a reflux still to make a neutral. Or you can add them to another stripping run of the same product. When adding heads and tails to another run how do you not just have 'more' heads and tails to remove.....so basically, wouldn't it essentially double the amount of heads and tails in that second run? Do heads always stay heads tails always stay tails ? (is what Im basically asking...).

Im making a sweet feed whiskey right now and have five runs of stripping saved up (tossed the very first portion of poison already) but included the heads/hearts/tails down to about 15%. Im ready to start a spirits run and am wondering if I should have taken the heads and tails of the first run and combined with the second, then taken those H&T and combined with the third...and so on or if I should have done what I did and just combined each one seperately. When I do the spirit run am I going to have five times the amount of heads and tails....and even further, if I save those heads and tails and throw them with another run will I have six times the heads and tails? At what point do you dump your heads and tails?

Sorry this doesn't really make sense...Im still trying to wrap my own head around the components of the dilema!
