Movies based around moonshine

Post by Andy Capp »

What films are there that are set around moonshine and the prohibition era?
I don't mean documentries or television shows but just fictional or based on true event movies.
I watched "lawless" last week and totally enjoyed it.
I've also read on here that "thunder road" is quite good.

One recent one that comes to mind is "Lawless," which is based on the book "The Wettest County in the World."

Lawless: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1212450/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

The Wettest County in the World: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wettes ... _the_World" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

Haven't read the book, but the movie wasn't bad, especially since Shia LaBeouf was in it (not too big a fan).

Edit: Obviously I don't know how to read... either that or I was thinking of something else and forgot.

I left the links anyway for reference. Sorry. :D

Thanks Mr Shine. I have those moments too
I recall watching a film years ago with Richard Pryor in it. About a moonshine runner who becomes a speedway racer. Anyone know what its called?

I haven't seen this one yet (but just heard the Jim Croce song which is its theme song).

The Last American Hero

It's about Junior Johnson. Not having seen it, I don't know how much of it is about running shine though, but I'd assume there's a fair amount in it.

"Thunder Road is the title of a 1958 drama–crime film about running moonshine in the mountains of Kentucky and Tennessee in the early 1950s." starring Robert Mitchum.

"The Untouchables" with Kevin Kostner and Sean Connery has a sort of bootlegging theme to it.

The Bootleggers was filmed in and around Calico Rock, Arkansas. I was very young but remember them filming it in the 70s. My uncle was an extra in it. It is available on DVD on Amazon but VERY expensive. Might try Ebay?

Just watched "Lawless" today on DVD. My daughter says the lead character "Forrest" is an Englishman. He pulled off the Southern Virginia dialect very well.

I saw another movie recently on one of the cable premium channels, but can't remember the title. I think it was Randy Quaid who played the bad guy sheriff. The lead character was a tanker driver who was carrying on an affair with the sheriff's wife. Seemed like a fairly new release - wish I could remember the title.

Found it! It's called "Moonshine Highway". I think someone may have already mentioned it. Good movie.

A heads-up - Set your DVRs. "Thunder Road", staring Robert Mitchum, will be on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) this coming Thursday (3/28) at 1:00am.
