So I decided to experiment and try something new with a batch this past weekend. Wanted to try and keep very traditional with it. Decided to make my own maple charcoal. Maple is fairly hard to come by in my neck of the woods, and have never filtered. So while at a Local BigBox hardware store I pick up a few slats of Maple, an empty paint can and change out a bottle of propane. While checking out, I ask the clerk if they happen to sell the steel 1gal paint cans with out the nonstick coating on the inside. After some discussion on cans, he finally asked me "why do you want to make your own maple charcoal anyways?" There was another older gentleman on break sitting behind the counter. Before I answered I looked over at him to see a wily grin on his face and he answers "To get better flavor in them meats Dave". Then threw a wink my way.
Is it me, or do some guys just know?!?! That or there are just more secret "hobbiest" out there than I realize. Especially for the part of the world I live in...
