peppermint vodka
I was feeling bored the other day so decided to try something different. Got a bottle of high proof stuff and macerated a handful of some mint leaves that were growing in the garden.
After a day of maceration the mixture was so green, you couldn't see through it but didnt quite have the flavour or aroma that I was after (due to the mint used, very bitter with little mint flavour), so I chucked it into the boiler after straining the leaves, with a bit of water to dilute it and emptied the contents of 3 peppermint tea bags in with it. Wasn't sure whether or not the mint would carry over and was starting to get worried when it was getting to the last 50mL with no flavour yet but just at the very end the smell of peppermint tea came through quite strongly. I then chucked a few mint leaves back into the peppermint vodka until I was happy with the colour then filtered them out, cut to 40% and bottled.
Personally I hate it as I'm not a fan of peppermint tea and might try get some strong apple or spearmint next time but all of the people I've given it to so far have loved it on ice or with a little water and have demanded bottles.

I tried
I redistilled about a gallon of heads, tails, and some I made earlier The cuts were way off, too busy, with water, and some mint above a packing in a pot still collum. The flavor didn't come over. I've made a simple syrup with some mint, I don't think it'll be minty enough. I'm probably try the leaves in the product at 50%, and see. I like mint in sprite with cherry. We'll see

Alot depends on the type mint your using. As a failsafe try throwing in a stick of pepperment candy,
of course now your experimenting with granny's cold medicine for what ails you.
I did something similair but with English Lavender. Macerated English lavender leaves in a 35-40% nuetral for two weeks. First went green, then brown, and finnished with a golden hue. Sweeten to almost where you like it, and then let it age for a month. The longer it ages the smoother it gets. It's good straight or on the rocks. The Ladies really enjoy it and it's something you won't find in the local liquor store.

Re: peppermint vodka
reviving this thread.
my neighbour brought me over a bunch of very aromatic mint.
didn't have any neutral on hand, but had some decent rum that I've been aging for about two months.
quick trip through carbon to stripp the color and a little flavour.
packed (as in quite full and packed down) 3- 1/2 pint jars with the mint leaves, and poured the white rum over top.
we'll have to see how it turns out.

Re: peppermint vodka
less than 24 hours later it is bright green and vey flavourfull.
took some and watered it down 50/50 with water (to about 25-30% abv) and added a little sugar. makes a damn fine mint schnapps.
filled a 375ml bottle with the schnapps and brought it over to the neighbour who gave me the mint.

Re: peppermint vodka
A couple years ago, I bought my local grocery store out of peppermint sticks on about January 2nd or so. Crushed them up, dumped it in a gallon jug, filled it up with 100 proof distillate, shook until the precipitate was completely dissolved in the solution, bottled, and handed them out. The girls loved it!
