Short Condenser Troubles

Post by straightedge_guy »

Hey Everyone.

I've recently had a stainless steel 2" column made for me (as shown in the picture). It is currently just an empty stainless steel frame and unfortunately, because I asked for the condenser part to be detachable (so that I could have someone solder in some copper pipe to turn it into a Liebig condenser), it turned out 20cm shorter than I would've liked it. I was wondering if someone could help guide me in picking a condenser that would be suitable for it. I've got a pump that can do 1000litres/hour and I was wondering if that would be adequate if I was to use a simple liebig 1" with a 1380W heating element?.. or perhaps I could try and fit several 1/2" copper pipes in the 2" diameter of the condenser part?
Any help appreciated.
Thanks Guys!

What about fitting down to a 1/2" copper tube. You could make a long copper coil and put it in another borrowed keg or a trashcan or whatever and have a great little potstill. There is simple beauty in the coil in a bucket condensor design.

I wholeheartedly agree. I swapped my small coil in a very pretty copper setup (which needed to have water running through it constantly) for a long copper coil in a 50 liter bucket. Now I don't need running water, and just one or two 2 liter bottles of frozen water. Makes me feel better about not wasting water, and it is very pretty. 8)

If your after a pot still and judging from the 45 bend on top of your column you are, you could use your condensor as a column and the column as the outer for a liebig although it would envolve cutting and welding again.
