DMX controlled element

Post by cb_j »

So humour me, i've got knowledge and access to lighting dimmers (3 phase, 2400 watts x 12 channels) but there are also smaller ~1000 watt dmx controlled dimmers around from electronics shops...

Would a DMX controlled dimmer be suitable for a heating element?
In the practical regular case, the dimmer controls a light, from 0% - 100% power. (but usually has a small minimum output.)

(DMX = lighting control, usually.)

You should read these two sections of the new distillers reading lounge on controllers:

Phase Angle Based Controllers:

Triac Based Controllers:
http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 0#p6961070

I don't know the specifics about DMX controlled dimmers, but dimmers themselves controlling in line are typically not recommended.

Cheers, more info -

DMX Control Dimmer Kit

This kit allows you to control a lamp or group of lamps through a DMX signal. You can use the USB Controlled DMX Interface kit (Cat No. KC-5480) or any other control console compliant with the DMX-512 protocol as a controller. It will drive resistive loads like incandescent lamps and mains voltage halogen lighting.

Specifications:
• Load capacity: 1000 W @ 230V (5A) or 500W @ 115V
• Power Input: 115/230 VAC

Just a fancy way of explaining a household dimmer switch. They cant push enough power without melting. I would not use them. I highly recommend either building your own controller, and if your not comfortable doing electrical work, then have a look at this thread by Jimbo on his electrical conversion - take note of the 10000W control module.

comfortable with electrics.

i just had an idea that may be useful... dmx control software would be capable of automating the element. software is free, build-your-own dmx hardware control kits are inexpensive and i already had everything i would need if it were appropriate.

and yes, it is a fancy household dimmer switch... :) but handles more power... :)
