Any trouble with spam lately?

Spam being on this forum, or in each of our personal email inboxes?

I have trouble with neither, although I have two persistent phishing emails that keep popping up from somebody in Britain who wants to conduct business, and one from Britain that keeps saying that I won a lottery that I'm pretty sure I never entered.

Other than that, the spamkillers that came free are doing a pretty good job. No more Viagra or penis enlarger ads. They used to run rampant a few years ago.

The best way I found to avoid spam on my forum is a mod called "anti bot question", it's free, not too difficult to install and available on a german phpbb site (translated).
Installed since 2 months and ZERO spam since that time!

The email I use came free when I signed up with my internet service provider. They probably have a few programs to delete the ones sent to everyone with an email address. The computer I bought came programmed with McAfee Security Center, which has its own spamkilling program.

It also helps that I don't give this address to very many sites. That's probably the biggest contributer to my apparent "spam immunity".

While I'm thinking about it, a magazine I get has an address for a "disposable email service": http://www.gishpuppy.com
Evidently, the magazine says that if you don't want to share your real email address with unfamiliar websites, this service will create one that forwards its messages to your inbox, then, you can delete that generated address if it draws spam.
Haven't tried it, haven't had a reason to do so. Let me hear if it works for you.

I've tightened down the hatches as far as spam emails recently. I get hundreds every day but my unix server has good filters now and spam rarely gets through any more. I use postfix with spam protections enabled, I use around 8 RBL (realtime black holes) to check for known spam hosts, and I use SpamAssassin which works with postfix and is able to learn to identify spam more accurately over time.

I forward 4 accounts to one unix server now and I'd say I get 1 or maybe 2 spam every 2 days which make their way into Thunderbird (the mail program I use) without being recognized as spam.

I agree that the best measures against spam is to limit the exposure of your actual emails. You can always change email aliases w/o losing your actual ones. You can use the aliases for public communications with unknown quantities. It's a good practice to use distribution lists when emailing a group of recipients. Gmail is a good public email resource as they generally trap most spam and you can use that anywhere without fear of attracting spam to your home or work email.

I believe there should be less spam here at the forums, now. Let's hope so, at any rate. It's a thundering nuisance.
