Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

reflux as a pot

Post by bundy_dan »

Hi everyone newb here, I have a still spirits super reflux still that I have been using for year or so now, and have got the hang of making pretty smooth vodka, I also age it on oak and add commercial rum essence for my rum. My question is if I take all the packing out which are ceramic saddles will this allow me to run it like a pot still. because I would like to make a real rum wash with molasses and run that through. the column is not very tall about 4 inches.
sorry for the dumb question thanx Bundy_dan.

I think it would work. What is the output you are getting with packing? When I used to have one of those still's I think I maxed it out at 80%, it's was a long way off the results gained after building a Bokakob inline. I think the still spirits super reflux minus the packing would produce spirit at probably 70%, my home made pot still starts at about 68% so I think you should be right.

thanks coopsoz , I can get about 85% if I run it at 79 degrees all the way. if I run it a higher temp without the packing will that will that lower my alcohol% and let the flavour come through? what temps should I run it at for a molasses wash. thanx.

Definately run it faster, rather than the drip, drip, drip required for neutral you should be aiming for a stream perhaps the size of a toothpick. As for the temps, it is too hard to say, peeps need to know there own setup. Just collect in stubbies and find your hearts the next day.

I've used the stillspirits reflux for a pot still. If you disconnect the cooling water to the reflux condensor (the water jacket around the top of the column) get rid of the rubber bung thermometer holder and the plastic product line you then have a pot still.

Rubber is bad mmmmmmkay, you should replace it with cork. Don't remove the water all togethor, just the one that is about 2/3 up the column.
