How much displacement is 1KG of sugar?

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

How much displacement is 1KG of sugar?

Post by centralpabiofuel »

I'm not sure if anyone else is not using metered carboy's but I'm using a
rubbermaid storage container that isn't marked with measurements. I
guess I could have made my own, but can't at the moment.

I'm using bird watcher's recipe. I see recipes for 80L washes and I'm
wondering if they are 80L of water plus the ingredients or a total of 80L.

What I mean is:
is it this?

80L water + Sugar + tomato + lemon = wash volume

or is it

80L = Sugar + Water + tomato + lemon?

If is is the latter, 80L total, then how much volume do I count on for the
liquefied sugar. Is melted/liquefied sugar 1L per KG or something? What's
the conversion for this?

It is total volume.

And you are getting too complicated. Just put the sugar (and other ingredients) in 10-20 litres of hot water and dissolve it fully. Then add cool water up to 80 litres. It has the additional advantage of a shorter cooling off time before you can add the yeast.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.

Take ot outside with a10 or 20 or 5 or whatever litre jug or bucket.
Fill it to 20 litres. make a texta mark on the outside or the inside, keep doing that till you have all your measurements marked.

Be a bit creative, you could use tape or paint or a scratch or anything to mark it. 8)

My recipe is for 80 liters including all ingredients, at a starting SG of 1.09.

My last wash started at SG 1.06 with much faster completion. Some members have stated preferences for various starting SG between 1.06 and 1.09.

This is entirely your option.

Good luck with your wash.

This calculator from the main site, will let you work these equations (i.e. 80L water + other stuff, OR water+other stuff == 80L)
