New Gin, Hello from the Great White North

Post by New_Gin »

Hello Forum Members

As you might tell from my user name, I am interested in distilling gin. I am on a quest to make what I think is a great gin, myself. I have a PDA-1 on order (copper compound still), already have a heart magic for essential oil extraction and all my botanicals sourced. My general plan is as follows:

1. I am going to choose some botanicals to work with, about 15
2. I am going to take ~.4 litre of GNS and add 20 grams of macerated botanical and let it steep 48 hours
3. I am going to use heart magic glass oil extractor still to run small batch of each neutral (400ml) with its single botanical and 500 ml RO water.
3. This will give me about 15 single varietal gins of just under 500 ml each (I am going to do triple batch of juniper and double batch of coriander)
4. I am going to get to know the botanicals and use the single botanical gin blends for recipe development, blending some of each until I find a blend worth doing in an all in one
5. I am using purchased GNS for now, corn based and I like it.
6. The recipe development is enough to wrap my spare time around for now, I will tackle making my own GNS next, after I get close to a recipe I like for gin. I did some research on Hybrid Mums and may start with that. Would love to make project two a local corn and wheat neutral spirit, we will have to see.

Research so far has included talking to lots of folks, 2/3 of the way through Compleat Distiller, read a number of articles and working my way through the forums. Many thanks to the folks who keep this going, invaluable to us newbie's.

Glad to have any comments on my plan, suggestions, mistakes you think I am making, open to all the help I can get. Objective is to create an amazing gin, top shelf all the way, will see if I can do it.

Hello and thanks
