clay/terracotta pots for aging arak

Post by elduderino »

does anyone have any experience with aging alcohol in terracotta pots? i want to distill my own arak and from my research aging in clay pots help mellow the flavor due to the porosity of the pots, although you lose some of the proof to the "angel's share". does anyone have any experience with this process and what i should look for in the clay pots and how to procure said pots? also, would aging in a glass jar suffice if the pots were not available? i have seen other sources use "glazed earthenware" which i take as glazed clay pots, but would assume it would only be on the outside surface as glazing in the internal portion of the pot would eliminate the porous nature of the vessel. is there lead based and also lead free glaze (and would that lead free glaze have any other heavy metals that could be harmful?) i am ignorant on this. any insight is helpful!
thanks

I age in glass, ss, and barrels. I would be wary of any clay pot you by do to not knowing what kind of clay was used or what kind of glaze it was given. There is a thread around here about stone ware that had high amounts of lead in them. If you really wanted to use clay pots I would just make them yourself. I would be worried that the alcohol (a solvent) would deteriorate the pot.
