Making Malt Extract From Malta (Malt Soda)

I live in that part of the world where it is very hark to find Malt Extract. When I inquire about it in the store they tell me to use cane sugar. The beer guys here bring it in small quantities for their use. Does anyone have any insight as to cooking down Malta (Malt Soda) to create extract?
